Social Inclusion, are we there yet?
The subject of social inclusion often elicits
differing views among persons with intellectual and developmental
disabilities, their families and professionals who support
them. One potential reason for this difference is that there
is relatively little communication among these groups of people.
We firmly believe that everyone would gain by initiating and
expanding links in order to create synergy!
Achieving Social Inclusion requires that WE (international,
national, regional and local associations of practitioners,
policy-makers, researchers, persons with intellectual disabilities
and their relatives, self-advocates, stakeholders and other
specialists) meet to set an agenda.
Together, we will share our knowledge of socially inclusive
practices as well as the conceptual frameworks that support
them. These varied (and at times similar) points of view, stemming
from different contexts, deserve to be shared. This process
will enhance our understanding of socially inclusive practices
and will contribute to the creation of an international alliance
on inclusion, creating more opportunities for social participation!
Please note that while this year's meeting will place special
emphasis on social inclusion, sessions addressing other issues
relevant to our field are also welcome.
