Welcome to the Gerontology Division Web Site

MissionThe Gerontology Division aims to provide a support network for all those who are dedicated to improving the quality of life of all aging persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

What is Gerontology?

Gerontology is a multidisciplinary study of aging from a variety of perspectives.

Biological Perspectives
Some biological aspects of the aging process differs for some persons with I/DD. Gerontologist in this area are interested in identifying particular aging-related conditions/diseases that are more prevalent in the I/DD population.  We are also interested in optimizing the aging process by promoting lifespan health and fitness.

Socio-cultural Perspectives
This includes designing and ensuring access to age-friendly occupational/vocational/leisure activities, and promoting a meaningful retirement. Another important area of  study is the caregiving experiences of families supporting aging individuals.

Psychological Perspectives
We are interested in the psychological adjustment to aging,  including cognitive changes, end-of-life, and bereavement issues. Another area is the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in older adults with I/DD.

Goals:

1)  To provide a professional forum for discussion about gerontological issues for the membership.
2)  To disseminate recent relevant research on aging topics.
3)  To highlight and encourage the exchange of ideas for innovative practices for enhancing quality of care and supports provided to older adults with I/DD.
4)  Advocate for the needs of all aging adults with I/DD, and their caregivers.

How Can You Participate?

Your comments and input are actively encouraged and welcomed!

Please send your suggestions for interesting journal articles, books, or websites, that are relevant to the Gerontology Division. We aim to keep this website regularly updated with the current research and education in the field.

It is also very important that innovative programs that are addressing the needs of older adults are highlighted. Such programs rarely get the recognition they deserve, and when a successful program has been implemented, it can help serve as a model to be emulated by others. Your suggestions will be considered for being featured in the Gerontology Division’s newsletter.
