"Where there is No Vision, the People Perish" (Proverbs 29:18)
Interfaith Disability Pre-Summit
(Before the Many Voices, One Vision National Disability Summit)
Tuesday Afternoon, September 20, 2005
Time: 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. followed by Networking Dinner

The AAMR Religion and Spirituality Division is working along with a number of other faith groups to plan and sponsor a first ever Interfaith Disability Summit on Tuesday, September 20 before the Alliance for Full Participation Many Voices, One Vision National Disability Summit in Washington, DC.

A number of faith based organizations are sponsoring a pre-summit gathering (2-5 p.m.) on Tuesday afternoon, followed by a reception and dinner (5-9 p.m.) with more time for fellowship, networking, and building connections. The purpose of the afternoon Gathering is threefold:

  1. To discuss key issues which the summit will address and the ways that faith communities and networks can help in addressing these issues with leaders of sponsoring organizations of the Many Voices/One Vision Summit.
  2. To share key issues for the future of ministries and religious services and supports with people with disabilities and their families, and share those with the leadership of the Many Voices/One Vision Summit.
  3. To strengthen collaboration and networking among faith-based networks and organizations involved in disability ministries.

The three-hour session on Tuesday afternoon will focus on objectives 1 and 2, and the evening dinner will focus the third objective. The evening will give participants a chance to meet and talk, to share more about their respective interests, organizations, and networks, and to explore possible ways of collaborating in the future. More information on the program will be available through the sponsoring organizations in the summer of 2005.

Sponsoring organizations for the Interfaith Disability Gathering include the National Council of Churches Committee on Disabilities, the AAMR Religion and Spirituality Division, the National Catholic Partnership on Disability, the National Apostolate for Inclusion Ministry, the Religion and Disability Program of the National Organization on Disability, Friendship Ministries, YACHAD (The National Jewish Council for Disabilities), the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the Consortium of Special Educators in Central Agencies for Jewish Education, the National Association of Christians in Special Education, the Union for Reformed Judaism, and the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation.
