Supports are resources and strategies that enable people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities to live a more successful life, including:

  • People
  • Agencies
  • Money or tangible assets
  • Assistive devices
  • Environments

Why Are Supports Necessary?

The supports approach developed over the past few decades as expectations increased regarding what people with intellectual disabilities could achieve and experience. In the past, a common approach was to place people with intellectual disabilities into pre-existing programs.

We now know that individuals with intellectual disabilities are capable of successfully fulfilling adult roles in societywhen provided with proper support.

Therefore, the supportsapproach evaluates the specific needs of the individual and then suggests strategies, services, and other supports that will narrow the gap between the individual’s personal competence and the demands of their living situation.
