The session will address research and reporting; the purpose, content, and structure of various methodological reports; and an examination and explanation of policies and issues involved in publication in scholarly journals in both print and electronic formats.                 

Currently half of the states are using the SIS statewide or in various regions, pilot studies or special applications. In this session states will share their experiences using the SIS to transform their statewide systems. State experiences with managed care will also be discussed. Specific lessons and achievements from the experiences of a half a dozen states will be shared along with states presenting their own analysis of what they have accomplished using the SIS. The SIS has advanced efforts in informing person centered planning, helping states deal with managed care initiatives, shaping resource allocation, and most importantly helping to transform their community systems by using the assessment of support needs to enhance quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.

All Day Session

The National Sibling Leadership Network (SLN) Conference: Catching the Future 
Approved for 7 NASW Social Work, 7 APA Psychology CE Units

The National Sibling Leadership Network (SLN) conference will provide adult siblings of people with disabilities, individuals with disabilities, families, and professionals in the disability field information about best practices and cutting edge research in the disability field. In addition, participants will learn about resources and share experiences with a network of siblings. Siblings often share the longest lasting relationships. As their parents age, siblings frequently fulfill the primary caregiving roles in supporting their brothers and sisters with disabilities. Yet these siblings often lack adequate information and support which their parents have gained through a lifetime of advocacy and system navigation.

The SLN is a national nonprofit with state chapters dedicated to providing siblings of people with disabilities information and support throughout the lifespan to advocate with their brothers and sisters to promote issues important to them and their entire families. Come help grow the sibling movement and participate in this conference!

Ethical Issues in Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services

This workshop will address key ethical issues in services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. An overview will be provided of several codes of ethics, including NASW, APA, AAIDD guidelines to Professional Conduct, the Board for Certification of Behavior Analysts, and the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals.  Key areas in which ethical issues arise will be highlighted, such as consent, service eligibility, and loving relationships. The perspective of advocacy organizations, as well as self-advocates, will be presented. Finally, there will be open discussion of the key ethical issues being faced currently by professionals in the field, as identified by the participants.

Do you want to learn more about how to effectively, safely, and respectfully include adults with developmental disabilities in your research? Join us for this hands-on, half-day session to learn more about key issues and effective strategies to promote the direct inclusion of adults with developmental disabilities in research. We will address topics covering all aspects of research participation (from research questions to consent to dissemination), including community-based participatory research.

How Do We Assess Spirituality and Provide Appropriate Supports for Individuals with I/DD?

Part of the challenge can be language differences between service providers and ministers (ordained and lay). This will be a working session discussing this question, which will also include education about language comfortable and useful for service providers.
