This workshop focuses on lessons learned about the integrity and utility of SIS data at the individual, program, and jurisdictional levels. Facilitators will use examples from North America and the Netherlands to discuss the impact of SIS (Adult and Child versions), and how quality data influences a strong program foundation. This workshop will assist participants to recognize the significance of quality SIS data and its impact on the individual’s life, utilize strategies to assure SIS data integrity at the individual, program, and jurisdictional level, and describe key factors that influence the quality enhancement process to include Interviewer Reliability Qualifications Reviews (IRQR).

The workshop will focus on understanding the behavioral health concerns of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The presentation will address issues regarding diagnosing Autism across the lifespan, co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses in ASD and behavioral equivalents (DM/ID), utilizing Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA’s) in differentiating problem behavior from psychiatric syndromes, designing best practice approaches for intervention planning including medications and assessing response to medications, and presenting mental health information to the Psychiatrist during clinic visits.

This session will provide an overview of research to practice issues in two areas—aging with intellectual and developmental disabilities and self-determination—that are receiving considerable attention across the world. Tamar Heller will provide a comprehensive examination of the research knowledge base in aging and intellectual and developmental disabilities and discuss international efforts to implement practices to improve the quality of life of aging people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Michael Wehmeyer, IASSIDD VP for the Americas, will, similarly, provide a comprehensive examination of the application of positive psychology to intellectual and developmental disabilities, drawing from the international Handbook of Positive Psychology and Disability, and focusing on the application of concepts such as hope, optimism, self-determination, and other positive psychological constructs to practice in intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This session will describe a) the process of implementation of the AAIDD health care guidelines at one of the premier health care systems in the USA, b) the process of implementation of the Canadian health care guidelines within a country that has universal health care c) creating multi-site (and multi-state) patient registries, highlighting their usefulness as tools for advocacy, research, and education, d) creating mobile applications (e.g., for the iPad) for both clinicians and families/individuals, e) describe the framework that he and colleagues have created to help clinicians navigate difficult conversations, and f) structures and oversight organizations involved in the training of doctors. The model, its applications, and difficulties in convincing medical schools to include training about the health guidelines for individuals with IDD will also be discussed.
