Joanna Pierson, PhD, Executive Director of the Arc of Frederick County received the 2012 Presidential Award today at the 136th annual meeting of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD).
The Presidential Award is presented in recognition of exceptional service to the Association. Recipients of this award are honored for their substantial contributions to advancing the Association’s mission, goals, or principles.
Dr. Pierson began her leadership activities with AAIDD when she was elected chair of the Maryland Chapter of AAIDD in 1990. She is well-known for her leadership in AAIDD on the national, regional, and state levels, serving on the national Board of Directors as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President of AAIDD.
Sharon Gomez, President of the 2011-2012 Board of Directors, presented this award in recognition for Dr. Pierson’s exemplary service to the Association.
Founded in 1876, AAIDD is the oldest professional society concerned with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
