The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) is extremely pleased to announce that Glenn T. Fujiura, PhD, has been appointed by the Board of Directors as the new Editor of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), the Association’s journal of policy, practice, and perspectives. He begins a four year term as Editor on July 1, 2011.
Dr. Fujiura is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the College of Applied Health Sciences and Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies of the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois¬–Chicago.
Engaged in intellectual and developmental disabilities research since the 1970s, three general themes are represented in his scholarly work: methodological rigor, interest in the forms and traditions of inquiry, and diversity of topical interests.
His portfolio of publications and grants include aging, community living, demography and statistics, disability policy, disability studies, family studies, fiscal research, health related studies, international issues, racial and ethnic issues, and measurement.
He brings a finely honed sense of the conduct and methodology of research, and unique perspective on the conceptualization of research. Dr. Fujiura expressed his vision for the journal thusly:
“Our field is unique in that policy, practice and ideology have direct and profound implications for all Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is what IDD has done so well in the past and should continue to do: provide a forum for the dissemination of rigorously reviewed, actionable information that is relevant to emerging policies, innovative practices, and transformative philosophies to the spectrum of constituencies involved in intellectual disabilities.”
Dr. Fujiura succeeds Steven J. Taylor, PhD, of Syracuse University, as Editor of IDD. First published in 1963, it is among the top journals in special education and rehabilitation.
Published bimonthly (6 issues annually), IDD is a peer-reviewed journal of practices and policies for professionals, clinicians, and program staff interested in intellectual and related developmental disabilities. IDD is intentionally distinguished from the American Journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AJIDD), AAIDD’s peer-reviewed journal that reports current and critical research in biological, behavioral, and educational sciences.
